ERR [Failed to set picture attributes: Invalid argument]

trying to run zoneminder - camera is red on console page.
there is nothing in the /var/logs/zm.
syslog has the following:

running xawtv works fine, and I can grab still images in xawtv, however, even though xawtv works ok, I do get these messages while running it:

edit: also btw: I am running ubuntu jaunty, eveything is installed through package manager, zm console lists version as 1.23.3
