Can ZoneMinder use SQLite, pref. v3, as the backend database? This would be very useful in embedded situations.

If not how modularised is the DB access layer, could a reasonable seasoned user add the support (i.e. me ).

No, and not very. Only MySQL.
I guess it depends on how seasoned, the modularity would need to be added as I guess DB4 would be just as nice for the same reason.
