Hi,

It depends on the type of input (mpeg4 decoding takes processor time) framerate and the number of zones. Theoretically it shoud be enough :-)
Now I have 4 analog cameras, BT8787 based card, until 5FPS the load is under 1. (dualcore AMD 5400+) The IO bandwidth is more important, use fast disks or striping (if you have more disks and need redundancy: RAID1+0)
The continous recording fully loads the IO capacity of my 7200RPM 320GB disk, so if I need to delete a lot of events, it takes hours.

Your pc should be enough to carry full load. To compare: 4 analog cameras 640*480*24bit at 5fps and one IP camera (Aviosys) 640*480*24bit at 5fps works well on AMD AthlonXP 1800+; RAM 768MB; HDD WD500GB 7200rpm; Ubuntu 9.04 server - average processor load 65%.
Now - a small upgrade to Celeron D 2,4GHz; RAM 1GB; HDD WD 500 7200rpm; Ubuntu 9.04 server and + one more analog camera - average processor load 40%.
