ffmpeg passing format and vcoded

Hi,
is there any way to specify for a ffmpeg source the format and the video coded in the same manner they are passed by command line?
Using ffmpeg by commandi line I'm able to stream an mjpeg streaming coming from vlc using
ffmpeg -f mjpeg http://xxxxx
if I setup the same stream by zoneminder the streaming format is not recognized.
