Perhaps there is a way to do this already and I am simply not aware. In which case, feel free to set me straight. :)

I would like to use a spare machine as, essentially, a software video server for the purpose of feeding ZoneMinder IP video from composite sources. There are dedicated hardware implementations that start at about $200 per channel. I would like to utilize existing PC hardware to accomplish this.

For my particular situation, I am looking to deploy ZM at my residence, with cameras around workshop about 100' behind the house, as well as cameras mounted on the house and around the front yard.

I would like to position up to 4 composite video cameras around the above mentioned workshop. Rather than running 4 separate RG58 lines at over 200 feet each from the shop to the ZM server in the house, it would be much more cost effective to do the capture/encoding with hardware located in the shop, then fed via existing Ethernet to the ZM server in the house.

Is this a feature that might be added? Or is there a way of doing this already that I am just not seeing?

You can do it with the mjpeg streamer but it not really a plug an play solution yet. Nore is it that hard to set up though.
