Question for setting up a network USB camera

Post by sincityharley »

I have zoneminder running great on my server. All devices attached are showing up just fine. Now I would like to add a USB camera thats connected to another computer running on my network. The other computer is running Ubuntu 10.4. I put the the IP address and the path /dev/video0 (I think) in the source area for the camera. Is there anything that I need to do on the other computer to make it available to the server? What else is needed?

So I installed Apache Web Server on the other machine. I still cant connect to my USB cam. I was reading on the internet that you need to know where your image files are stored. How do I find that out? Do I need to get some sort of camera software running first? If so what software? Also I am attaching a screenshot of my ZM console. What would the correct path be?

Are you trying to access the USB camera as a device on the remote machine? If so I don't think ZM can do that. You need to a run ZM on the remote computer as well, or some other streaming software(mjpegstreamer, Motion) that your server can access.

Yes - on the remote computer you need *something* that creates a jpg, mjpeg or mpeg stream. Once you have that and a webserver, you simply tell ZM on your server to grab that URL

I am now stuck at the "Remote Host Path". I installed motion on the other computer as suggested. I am able to pull live video from all other computers on the LAN. I am unclear on what my remote host path is? I am using a USB quickcam with motion.
