"proxy" viewing of zoneminder cameras?

Not quite sure if I'm using the term "proxy" correctly here (in the context of CCTV recording), but since zoneminder is consolidating and recording the streams, rather than going directly to the cameras now, I assume the ideal way to remotely display the streams is to go through zoneminder?
I investigated by creating a "viewonly" user, logged in and out numerous times, and found that the URL created of the image is always of this form:
http://<zm>/cgi-bin/nph-zms?mode=single&monitor=1&scale=100&auth=<authkey>&connkey=<connkey>&rand=<randnum>
Trimming the URL to just this also allows me to view the stream for this camera:
http://<zm>/cgi-bin/nph-zms?mode=single&monitor=1&scale=100&auth=<authkey>
I'm not sure if <authkey> will be different (it was the same everytime, in the last few hours), but is this the right way to do it? Am I saving any effort in going through zoneminder, or should I just access the cameras directly?
