Zone Minder Newbie

Post by analogkid »

I just inherited a zoneminder camera system v.1.23.3. It currently has six cameras, but only one of them is active, source i.p. is shown as green. While the remaining 5 cameras are inactive, source i.p. shown in red. All six cameras are in Modect. I tried to read the on-line documentation, but I’m not familiar with Linux, so at this moment it’s an uphill climb. Can anyone out there guide me through the appropriate steps needed to get the remaining 5 cameras up and running. Thanks.

You need to post the type of camera's and if IP, the model number of each, if analog the type and model of capture card will be important, the source setting from the camera that's working and the source settings from the five that are not, add to that the Linux distribution/version and you'll get someone to help you out.

Thanks, I'll try and post all that tomorrow.

All the cameras are an AXIS 2120, running IP.
Running on Ubuntu Server 8.10
The source setting is exactly the same for both the working camera and the none working cameras, except for the remote host names.
Thanks!

Six IP camera's using the same IP address won't work, your lucky to even have one working. Change five to unique addresses and also change the camera's to use those new IP's.

My mistake, all six cameras have their own i.p. address. The 5 camers that are currently not working were at one time functional. As far as I know no one has altered any of the system settings. I'm wondering if I reset the system, if that will do the trick. Hmm again this isn't a windows based os.

Can you access all six through a browser? If yes, then try changing the monitor function (one at a time) from Modect to Monitor, save and then change back and save. If the answer is no, you have a camera issue to work through.

I'll try it as soon as I get a chance. Thanks for the help.

At the risk of being too basic - check the cameras still exist...

Ping them, visit their ip's in a web browser and ensure they all still work.

The good news is that Axis are the best around and present very few problems to a system maintainer.

If they're all fine in a web browser and not in zoneminder, try looking at some logs - often a hint or two in there.

/var/log/zm/ or /var/log/zoneminder are common log locations, and also /var/log/syslog is used.

This worked on four of the cameras, the last one appears to be broken. Next step I suppose is to install a new camera in place of the broken one. Thanks for the help bb!

With me there is no risk of that happening. Good info to have and know, thanks. :D
