ZM Console "dead" - think I need help with permissions?

Thanks in advance for any pointers - I'm convinced that my issue is something simple that has been overlooked...
Previously I've compiled ZM for a number of Ubuntu systems without a hitch, including the use of the .deb package as far back as when it first became available 'round 2007.
I'm currently on Ubuntu 10.10 and have installed from the Ubuntu repos.
...applied the "post-deb install" tweaks, (zmfix -a w/the chmod, link the apache.conf to zm.conf, adduser www-data to video), but the Console refuses to let me edit the monitor.
**I do get the monitor popup, but none of the tabs open save the first, so unable to specify the "source" (2nd tab)
**As well, I'm able to create monitors, 'tho unable to delete them.
**Also unable to start or stop ZM from the console, from command line I can.
(thus I call the Console "dead")
help, thanks
FWIW - I'm using only one USB webcam that is recognized by the system as present, including zm via command-line.
Forgive me should a solition to this issue be addressed elsewhere; after exhaustive searching it seems that no-one has the same issue that I do.
Thanks again
