[solved] All zero events after working fine for months?

Hi folks, I've googled, searched the forums, and dug around inside ZM with no success so far. Hopefully I haven't missed something obvious.
Also, I've been a bad boy by not monitoring this install as closely as I should. I'm back in the saddle now though. Thus the question.
I have a ZM 1.24.2 installation on Ubuntu 10.04. For many months after installation, ZM worked fine, producing triggering on motion, recording events to disk, etc.
I noticed today as I started looking around that for the last 6 months or so, ZM has been recording events in the database, but nothing is going to disk. Lots and lots of zero (0) frame events, every few seconds.
Is it disk space? No, I have over 100GB free.
Is it permissions? I don't think so: everything's user www-data, group www-data, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I'm not sure where to look next and would welcome guidance, even if it comes in the form of a slap up the side of the head.
