Best setup for AXIS camer (M3114)

Post by ocgltd »

I managed to get my hands on an Axis M3114 camera loaded with cool features (until now I've been running a no-name cheapy with A/D conversion at the PC). I've got the camera working fine in ZM using MJPEG and HTTP port, but I need some general advice to start.

This camera has lots of cool features. What's the best way to set it up to keep network & server loads down?
1. HTTP vs RTSP: I don't really know the pros/cons. Which protocol is better?
2. MJPEG vs H264: I've read that H264 has much lower network demands - is this a no brainer?
3. Motion detection: This camera has built-in motion detection. Should I let the camera do it or ZM?
4. Other? Are there other features I should use on the camera?

I'm somewhat of a newbie to ZM. Even though I've been running it for a couple of years, I grabbed the VMware appliance version of ZM and skipped the tough stuff :)

Thanks!

For stability and system load, I would recommend Mjpeg at 5fps, colour with the Axis cams. That suits most scenarios, and you can specify b&w on the url to further drop bandwidth, load and disk space if you need to.

Axis cams usually have a "url builder" in their web interface where you can set exactly what picture you want and then cut and paste the path to zoneminder.

Some six years I've been using ipcams with zoneminder now, and Axis are still by far the best. But when you can get 3 or 4 chinese vga cams that do mostly the same thing, it's getting harder to justify their cost :(
