A great implementation may be a Virtual Cam.

A virtual Cam is a real cam with some changes like a mask zone, filter effect, or composition of two or more real cams.

This feature may create a two or more cams mosaic composition in one frame.
In addition this function may create 3D cams, by choosing blending rules.

3D above below (with full or half vertical resolution to avoid interlaced)
3D left right
3D side by side (used by blueray3D (half horizontal resolution))
3D interleaving (used at 3d-dvds)
3D frame by frame (nvidia)
3D anaglyph colour (and which anaglyph filter colours)
3D anaglyph B/N (and which anaglyph filter colours)

All this video format may be visible under Ubuntu with Bino (bino.nongnu website)and windows with it or Stereoscopic Player.
