Axis M1011 cameras and greyscale

I got approval to switch some of our cameras to black and white, but am having trouble getting it to work. I've got the cameras changed to display black and white, but when I try to modify zoneminder to change the camera's colour to 8 bit greyscale it looses the camera. If I leave it at 24 bit colour it displays, but my servers load didn't change. I was guessing I missed something since the load didn't change.
