zma crashes and no zone image

Hi
I'm running Zoneminder 1.24.2 under Ubuntu 11.04 load through apt-get on a Foxcom Nettop nT-330i.
using a pair of Microsoft HD usb cameras.
Zoneminder seems to recognize the cameras fine since they both show up in the 'Montage' window, but when I select the default zone for either monitor, the parameter input window appears, but no image is displayed.
When I list /tmp/zmdc.log I get the following:
salmon@salmon-nT-330i:/tmp$ tail zmdc.log
10/02/2011 17:09:00.140656 zmdc[8707].INF ['zma -m 1' crashed, signal 6]
10/02/2011 17:09:17.082783 zmdc[8707].INF [Starting pending process, zma -m 7]
10/02/2011 17:09:17.084978 zmdc[8707].INF ['zma -m 7' starting at 11/10/02 17:09:17, pid = 8941]
10/02/2011 17:09:17.192397 zmdc[8707].INF ['zma -m 7' crashed, signal 6]
10/02/2011 17:10:20.069492 zmdc[8707].INF [Starting pending process, zma -m 1]
... so it looks like zma is crashing, possibly due to permissions or ownership issues ..
Note sure where to go from here, but it seems a solution shouldn't be too far away.
cheers
Derrick
