Axis 2100 cameras and low FPS issues/cpu load problems

I have 2 axis 2100 cameras (with more to come, but 2 for right now). One is set up at 320x240 (8kb/image) the other is at 640x480 (18-20kb/image). I am barely getting 1-2fps on both cameras. The server is a P4 2.4 with 1gb ram (Compaq EVO D510). There is about a 5min lag between what happens at the camera and what is displayed on the Montage (or Video screen in general). I am running 0.19.1 of zoneminder, and RH FC 2 Test 1. Everything seems to function correctly, with the exception of the low frame rates... Also, since the FPS is soo low, the cameras sometimes miss events (Like fast moving objects/people). Any ideas? The current load on the server is between 1.3 and 1.6 (Spikes to 1.8 at times).. Memory usage looks good, only about 200-250mb is being used, 750mb free (Reported from top). I am using the /axis-cgi/mjpg/video.cgi url to grab frames from the cameras..

UPDATE: when the 640x480 cam is set to "monitor" instead of modetect, it easily gets 5fps (or so zm reports). So the problem appears to be in the motion detection...

Hi Greg,
A couple of things first of all. Are you using the static jpeg path or the motion jpeg path for the Axis cameras? The latter should be much quicker. Static image grabs from network cameras are lucky to get over 5fps but I can get 25fps out of my Axis 205 on the motion jpeg path. Secondly, are you really getting 5 _minutes_ delay on the images? Or was that a typo? A delay of 5 seconds is quite common if you use mpeg streaming to Windows as the Window Media Player likes to bufer a bunch before displaying any. Personally I prefer the 'live' view through Cambozola as it's much more instant so you might want to try that and see how it works for you.

Yea, using the mjpg path, the full path is /axis-cgi/mjpg/video.cgi for both cameras.. And yes the delay is about 4-5 min.. The 640 camera is on our 4th floor storage, I went up there and moved around to trigger, went down to my office (on 1st floor) and watched myself trigger the camera... As for Cambozla, I would like to set this up but I have yet to have time.. Do I basicly drop the .jar file into the zm web dir (/var/www/html/zoneminder) and enable the ZM options for it? Thanks for the quick reply, zone minder rocks!

Hi Greg,
Assuming you get a faster FPS when viewing the cameras directly, and so ruling out a slow network link, I can't really think of anything that should mug it so badly, other than being directly limited in the settings. The difference in motion detection seems quite high, normally this doesn't affect capture rate at all, however what setting do you have for your zones, just the default?
Cambozola installation is as simple as you have describe, plonk it in the ZM web director, switch on the options and point the path to it and off you go.
