TRANS IP camera, cannot get RTSP working

Have zoneminder running under Ubuntu Server 12.10 LTS with its own NIC for the cameras.
Accessing camera via vlc rtsp://192.168.1.123/mpeg4 shows the stream without issue.
Using the settings for a remote camera of:
Remote Protocol RTSP
Remote Method RTP/RTSP
Remote Host Name 192.168.1.123
Remote Host Port 554
Remote Host Path mpeg4
Remote Image Colours 24 bit colour
Capture Width 1280
Capture Height 720
However resulted in a very funky "running" painting kind of image. It also throws a boat load of ERR/INF/WAR in the log, see attached image of log:
Anyone seen that before or understand how to fix it?
Next, I tried ffmpeg as the source and used the url rtsp://192.168.1.123:554/mpeg4 as the path with complete success.
However, with the ffmpeg source, the image is not as clear as with using VLC. Is this a setting I need to put on the ffmpeg options?
I'd like to attach more than one image, but it won't seem to work properly for me, see subsequent posts.
Otherwise, for $90, this camera seems a pretty good deal for an outdoor security camera system for the house I am building.
