Ubuntu server & eyetoy

I know this camera is an oldie, but I have five of these and it's all I got for right now. Cameras are woking under windows xpcrap and works with my Ubuntu desk-top machine with camera monitoring software and vlc.
I have read most every post on here ref. set up of this usb cam and for the life of me can't get it to work.
I have installed Ubuntu 10.04
Installed Zoneminder
Made the mods to for memory
Made the additions to zmdc.pl
Then I go to setup monitor I select the following "Presets":
BTTV (V4l2) PAL 320x240 and it show registered, then the active light (show recording on camera) goes off on the eyetoy and I have no video.
All other presets I use, monitor will show registered then within a few seconds will de-regisster.
Do I actually have to restart zoneminder each time I load a different preset?
Do these only work in "Low", "Medium" or "High" bandwidth?
Do I need to run something like cambozola streaming and route that stream to zomeminder?
And most importantly, does anyone know if and how to run a stream from vlc to zoneminder if I have to use a seperate stream to zoneminder to get this thing working.
Any help would be more than helpful.
Thanks
amphibian
