Recommended trim/purge/archive/whatever procedure?

Post by bs27975 »

If I understand what I read in the wiki correctly, archiving almost, in essence, sets a read only flag. And once archived, events can be deleted.

Only through this process is the database updated?

What is the recommended purge / trim / 'archive' / pick your term procedure for moving old events off to alternate storage? Links welcome.

I see an ftp purge perl script, but from my quick view it merely deletes the image files.

Don't know whether that's good or bad.

Not sure what I'm looking for, but I think it's something like keep all events in the database (for querying), but upon wanting to look at old footage, be prompted to put in dvd # X.

'course this also implies a dvd creation mechanism.

Thoughts, suggestions, pointers?

What zoneminder calls an "archive" event is simply a database flag that is associated with the event in question. Neither the image files nor the dB metadata get moved anywhere when the archive bit is set. Archived events can be deleted just like normal events, which is why it is important to include an archive status check in one's purge-when-full-filter.

Your idea is not a bad one, the trouble is that right now zoneminder is limited to a single storage location. To be able to archive files off in the manner in which you are suggesting is not possible without modifcation.

Take a look at this issue here:
https://github.com/ZoneMinder/ZoneMinder/issues/21

You might want to particiate in that issue to help get that implemented into the next release of zoneminder.
