Recommended trim/purge/archive/whatever procedure?

If I understand what I read in the wiki correctly, archiving almost, in essence, sets a read only flag. And once archived, events can be deleted.
Only through this process is the database updated?

What is the recommended purge / trim / 'archive' / pick your term procedure for moving old events off to alternate storage? Links welcome.
I see an ftp purge perl script, but from my quick view it merely deletes the image files.
Don't know whether that's good or bad.
Not sure what I'm looking for, but I think it's something like keep all events in the database (for querying), but upon wanting to look at old footage, be prompted to put in dvd # X.
'course this also implies a dvd creation mechanism.
Thoughts, suggestions, pointers?
