Has anyone explored using IR LED's to augment the night vision that a lot of cameras have these days? I had a thought that if it would be useful, I might hunt for some LED strips/bars that are weatherproof, and install them at the distant end of a cameras LED range. Hook them up to a sensor so they'd turn on when the light levels got down to a low enough level and turn them off when it started getting daylight.
One camera I have is mounted under the eave of my house by the back yard. There's very little ambient light at night there so it does get really dark. At the far end of the frame the IR LEDs from the camera do help but if this idea is worth exploring more I think I could add some extra illumination where it would be useful.
Augmenting IR
Re: Augmenting IR
After more than 15 years, no longer using ZM as surveillance system.
Now in the dark side, using a commercial system...

Some interesting options there. I've sent email to the folks at www.superbrightleds.com to see if they've thought about doing a weatherproof IR LED strip. Not sure if I'll ever to around to this project but the possibility is interesting.
