Archiving to external media

Has any thought been given to an easy to use method (preferably automated) of archiving a day/week worth of data on DVD or other external storage and getting it back easily?
This would be great. Even something simple like
1) allow automatic archiving of all events, ideally with transcode capabilities to xvid/divx (mpeg4) or other high quality/low storage requirement format (each event in its own small divx/xvid file, name either based on 'event##.avi' or even better 'date+time.avi')
2) detect total disk usage of all archived files, when approaching a predefined threshold (e.g. 650MB or 4.1 GB), allow external script to run
3) external script moves all existing files to new directory and burns to CDROM/DVD, while new files accumulate in old directory. This would thereby not interfere with zoneminder continuing to capture new events in parallel.
