Update / upgrade questions.

As a new user, I installed 1.27 from scratch following a very nice tutorial for CentOs. I had errors regarding VLC libraries and ignored them not intending to use them at the time. No I have a case where I would like to try them out and it looks like I need to recompile to include them. I have installed VLC and the required libraries since the initial ZM install.
Above all, I would like to avoid losing the configuration I have set up for my for cameras and associated zones as well as modifications to the Apache configs. I have used different Linux distros for a number of projects over the years but am beyond ignorant when it comes to Make
options and operations.
So:
What is my best option?
Can I install a now released RPM or other package to overwrite my install?
Can I just replace the executables with ones pre-compiled with VLC?
Longer term it would be nice to be able to update as new releases or patches come
out without having to recompile.
Help or suggestions appreciated.
