What kind of DVR are you trying to connect to?
If it supports rtsp you should be able to connect to the streams if you port forward port 554 on your router with ffmpeg or the remote option. I have had better results with ffmpeg and Centos rather than the remote method.
If you can also try with vlc player that will give you a good starting point.
