Getting efficient video files from ZM on Pi 2

Post by _peterlast »

So I have ZM running on a Pi 2 with Ubuntu Mate. Foscam FW9831W. Everything is hooked up. What I want to do is relieve my Synology of videorecording duties. This will save me a lot of power as th NAS is only needed a few hours a day max, sometimes not at all a few days on a row. What I am used to from the Syno is that it outputs videofiles. After a lot of searching I found that Zoneminder only seems to store images and that they are stored deep within the events folder. Is that correct? That in itself is not a problem perse but I need to be able to store 1,5 day of video on 12gb and I don't think that will work with 7 jpg's a second. 1,5 hour of recording has given me 1gb of pictures.

Is there any way to make ZM record a video? I haven't really found many options to configure that except for ffmpeg output parameters which seem to be for exports or events. Is there a description on what events mean within the ZM realm?

check out the video branch of ZM - seems various users are using it with good success (but its beta as far as I know)
There are options there to record directly to an mp4 and completely disable jpeg storage.

I haven't installed it myself, but folks gave me access to it and it works just fine. I can't point you to an installation procedure because I don't know. Hopefully someone else can chime in. I also don't know if it works on a Pi, but I assume it does.
I no longer work on zmNinja, zmeventnotification, pyzm or mlapi. I may respond on occasion based on my available time/interest.
