Getting efficient video files from ZM on Pi 2

So I have ZM running on a Pi 2 with Ubuntu Mate. Foscam FW9831W. Everything is hooked up. What I want to do is relieve my Synology of videorecording duties. This will save me a lot of power as th NAS is only needed a few hours a day max, sometimes not at all a few days on a row. What I am used to from the Syno is that it outputs videofiles. After a lot of searching I found that Zoneminder only seems to store images and that they are stored deep within the events folder. Is that correct? That in itself is not a problem perse but I need to be able to store 1,5 day of video on 12gb and I don't think that will work with 7 jpg's a second. 1,5 hour of recording has given me 1gb of pictures.
Is there any way to make ZM record a video? I haven't really found many options to configure that except for ffmpeg output parameters which seem to be for exports or events. Is there a description on what events mean within the ZM realm?
