Version of libvlc?

Since upgrade to 1.28.109 I can't get libvlc working on Ubuntu 14.04.
Exactly which files and versions are needed?

Is it crashing? If so a patch was recently
committed by steveG to master that solves this issue. It will be part of 1.29
