Question about network setup.

Post by tiripon »

Hi All,

I hope I am not in the wrong category.

I am planing to install ZoneMinder 1.30 on a server on Ubuntu 16.04 64bit (server version- no gui)

It is a Dell server with 2 network interfaces.

I wan't to know what would be the most efficient way to to monitor about 20 cameras without causing too much traffic on the network.

So, I have my network of switches and everything is on the same subnet (192.168.1.X - 255.255.255.0)
I also have a 24 ports POE switch which will be dedicated to all my cameras. I was planing to set the cameras on a different subnet (192.168.2.X - 255.255.255.0)
Then I would Connect 1 card of my cam server to 192.168.1.X subnet and the other card to 192.168.2.X

So, ZoneMinder on the cam server should be able to monitor all the cameras on 192.168.2.x and I should be able to manage ZoneMinder on 192.168.1.X.

If I would like to be able to also manage each camera from 192.168.1.X I would need to do some sort of routing on the cam server.

Is this a proper way of setting this kind of environment?

What do I need to do on Ubuntu 16.04 to do the routing?

Thank you

This is very close to what I'm setting up. It should work fine. I'm not experienced with using many cameras, and I only today got a HD camera which has been challenging.

You will not be able to communicate with the cameras from the 192.168.1.x subnet. Your POE switch will be a 10-100 so it will limit the throughput to your other (gig?) switch. Best to keep it simple and get it to work!

Actually my POE switch is a D-Link DGS-1210 which is 10/100/1000
I was surprised when I started shopping for cameras to find out that 10/100/1000 cameras are very rare.

Surely there must be some sort of VPN or routing software I could use on Ubuntu to bridge from 192.168.1.X to 192.168.2.X ?

I realized that the ZM server must be fast. Especially with 1080P and up. I was lucky enough to find a used Dell sever on ebay for a very cheap price.
