Hello,
I've been working to get ZoneMinder stable off and on for the last month or so. My efforts have been fairly casual during the pandemic because I havn't been traveling much. I just found out that I've got a business trip here in a few weeks so I'd like to get my system working better before I leave.
I have ZoneMinder running as a VM on a Dell R710 In XenServer. In the midst of my configs I just started throwing resources at it to see how it would respond. I'll likely take some resources away when I can get a good and stable config. Last night I think I made some better progress with lowering the frame rate. Here is what I have so far:
XenServer 20 cores running at 2.4Ghz with 36Gigs of memory
5 (2xreolink RLC-420 and 3xE1) cameras running 2560 x 1920 6fps and Image Buffer at 60
1 HikVision DS-HD1 camera running 1536 x 2048 with an Image Buffer at 65 (looking into the frame rate currently running ~15fps)
The doorbell camera has been working fine in Zoneminder. There are times where the others don't look right. When I reduced the frame rate the issue decreased in frequency and length however it still happens. I've attached a couple of screenshots. Are there more adustments that I need to make to the cameras? Or is this an issue with my setup in ZoneMinder?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Loren

Re: Noob trying to get zoneminder stable
I think that I may have found the root of the problem. I got fed up with trying to find it earlier this afternoon and started to experiment with motion detection on 640x480 streams and had no issues with recording or playback. It occurred to me that it could be that my read and write speeds (to and from a NAS) could be the problem. Could poor read and or write speeds be the cause of my problem?
Re: Noob trying to get zoneminder stable
You may want to search the forum for posts regarding keywords: FFMPEG and "streaking, smearing, blurring" ... to see if you can optimise how you are handling the video streams.
Reducing resolution and frame rate can relieve some of the stress on the system, making it appear stable

I can't say whether visual artefacts would be a side-effect of that, but poor I/O performance would cause your system load average to go high.

I did do a little more digging and found a post that was relevant to my issue: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=25874&sid=5889c900 ... &start=15 Thank you for the help!
Anyone trying to figure out how to get their Reolink cameras to play nice, the rtmp url was what solved it for me. I have the RLC-420-5Mp and the E1 zoom. This solution worked great so far for both cameras.
