Event playback - time to next event = 50 years

Currently running 1.34.16, but the problem has been on the system since upgrading many versions ago.
Problem seems to have developed after an upgrade. I think I went through the proper process of stopping, zmupdate.pl, starting each time.
Most of the time (but not always, sometimes I can click a few places on the progress bar below the image without the issue appearing) when trying to view an event, and panning back/forth the video will stop, and a large number will appear with "time to next event = xxx seconds" This number is approximately 50 years.... (epoch/unix timestamp???)
I've checked through the forum and online, and tried:
mysqlcheck repair
buffer settings in the source
timezones are set correct in php and mysql
all of the different combos in the webui - gapless, none, etc
nothing seems to be showing up in any logs that I can see.
If I view an event from a month ago and attempt the same, the "time to next event" changes relative to the time on a current event. I'm really at a loss on what to look for, hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.
