I am new to zoneminder
i have just built a debian 10 and followed the wiki to install zoneminder
i have a capture card in the pc and have connected a camera
however when i setup the camera /dev/video0 chan 0 i dont capture anything and i get a load of error messages

any advice would be welcome

In your logs it says its a zms error not a capture error. You may just need to follow the instructions in the error message.

But per subject: Analog cameras are covered in the HCL: https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Hardware_Compatibility_List IP VIdeo encoders, capture cards, bt8x8 cards are all relevant.
