Would it be possible to use ZM to trigger an audible chime, when a camera goes into alarm? Has this been attempted, anywhere in here?

What you are really asking is: Can ZM do some arbitrary task on motion detect? At the moment, no one has bothered to implement it.
What there is, is that you run a filter that matches events and does some arbitrary command on them. So it would work but with a slight delay.
There is also zmeventserver which monitors for alarms and takes action a little faster. At the moment it does object detection but you could change it to do anything.

You can use a ZM filter to trigger audible alarm by placing the alarm sound clip at /usr/share/zoneminder/www/sounds/ and using the software mpg123 to play the sound clip. The details can be obtained from the following link.
