old MSI H57M-ED65 CPU, i3-540, 4 GB ... some years i'm running zm 1.30.4 under debian 9 ... now I've setted up this server with CentOS 8 and a new version of zm (I think it is 1.34 - I stepped back). Although the settings in the 5 Vivotek-Cams (RTP/RTSP) did'nt change and the settings in zm are the same (max 12 FPS), the system load of the new system is significant higher - too much for this system, I stepped back.

Is there a reason why the new OS & zm stresses the same HW much more?

I cannot answer as to why to system load changed, but I had the same CPU and it did not keep up after I added a 3rd camera. I "upgraded" to a i7-2700k and it handles 6 cameras just fine, all in modect mode.

If I were guessing I would say you need more than 4 threads. (2 real, 2 hyper)

FYI: I've setted up an older board with an i3 CPU 540, installed Samba (with rarely traffic), miniDLNA (with no traffic during the day) - and zoneminder for 5 Vivotek Cams in RTSP/modect with 12 FPS:

• ... my old installation Debian 9 with zm 1.30.4 - CPU load 28-32%, CPU load averages 1.64 (1 min) 1.30 (5 mins) 1.22 (15 mins)
• ... setted up on an actual Debian 10.6 with zm 1.34 - CPU laod ~ 40%, CPU load averages = 1.90 (1 min) 1.97 (5 mins) 1.63 (15 mins),
• ... setted up on an actual CentOS 8 with zm 1.34 - even a little bit more load ... an additional backup job brings the system to their knees.

For me the older OS and older zm does stress the system fewer. I will test an i5-750 next.
