Brand New to Zoneminder 1.36.5

I just installed a brand new Zoneminder 1.36.5. The web interface seems to be working fine. I have Reolink RLC-520A cameras which with QNAP QVR Pro, Shinobi, Onvifer, and TinyCam Pro I have used RTSP with rtsp://192.168.x.y:554/h264Preview_01_main as the general form of URL.
I want Zoneminder only to view and not record cameras. I am able to add a camera.
The Dashboard says Monitor -- Not running.
From what I read, ZoneMinder does not work well with RTSP, so I changed to RTMP as suggested:
rtmp://192.168.30.45/bcs/channel0_main.bcs?channel=0&stream=0&user=admin&password=mypassword
I also set the capture resolution to 2560x1440.
Now that I added the camera, how do I view it? This product is not straight forward to me.

My bad. It looks like this program is used to manage camera assets and not actually view cameras. Somehow I thought this was an NVR.

Zoneminder can view and record the camera feeds. I am not sure what you are needing?

After reading a lot more I can see that Zoneminder should be able to view and record cameras. I just want to set up viewing right now for my nine Reolink RLC-520A's. I finally detected the cameras through ONVIF and they all showed up. I added them all and it seems it chose source type ffmpeg and function monitor. The method it chose was UDP Multicast. The source path it chose is:
rtsp://admin:password@192.168.30.45:554/h264Preview_01_main
So, everything is fine because those setting work for QVR Pro, Shinobi, Onvifer, and TinyCam Pro.
The dashboard lists all the cameras as "Monitor" and "Not Running". Do I need to start them somehow?

So, apparently this program just won't do either RTSP or RTMP for my Reolink RLC-520's. I like the tabular listing of cameras, so I decided to keep it and use it as a camera inventory listing to keep track of my cameras and their settings. Since I have NVRs that actually work, I will check back on down the road sometime to see if a newer version works.

I do not have that brand of camera, but my Amcrest cameras use RTSP.
rtsp://admin:password@192.168.42.150:80/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0
Did you check the log to see why the cameras are not working?

I have an amcrest camera set up and it is green and capturing now with the monitor setting. When I click on the camera to view it, I get a blank page with a little broken graphic despite seeing positive frame capture rate. It is like the viewing part of the product is broken. If I drop the same RTSP url into VLC, the camera displays.

My Reolink RLC-810A and RLC-820A cameras work just fine with the source as:
rtsp://admin:Password@reolink_camera.com:554//h265Preview_01_main
rtsp://admin:Password@reolink_camera.com:554//h265Preview_01_sub
It is detailed on the Reolink support website:

I suspect you don't want multicast. You likely want unicast.
multicast is cool but you need to know what you are doing to play with it.

In case you haven't gotten that far yet, once your monitors are running, you'll probably want to use Montage Review, rather than Montage, to look at them; I find it much more tractable.
Now, that said, yes, you absolutely should be able to get it to just pull images from the cameras, even if it doesn't record them; like the other folks above, I suspect you have parameter problems, unless maybe you just don't have enough computer under it. I have 11 720p cams, and I needed a 16GB i7 to keep up with that much data (plus recording); it's easier if you're only monitoring.
