event play button greyed out, always defaults to stop

I'm running zoneminder v1.34.23 on a raspberry pi4. got two problems:
1) any event playback always defaults to stop (at the very bottom) and the play button is greyed out (see screenshot attached) and replay always defaults to 'none' if I change it to 'single' and then select 1x it plays. is there a way to make replay default to 'single'?
2) the video button will not generate a video for any event. the ''generate video' button is greyed out and underneath it always says 'No Video Files Found'. thanks for any help.
ps: I have trieed clearing cookies, made no difference. I've viewing zm in google chrome on a windows 10 pc

1.34 is seriously old. Please update to at least 1.36, 1.37 is preferred if you are going to run on pi.

thanks but I am using the latest version thats available for me from the zmrepo

You need to the url in apt sources to the 1.36 repo or master. We do not auto-update between major releases.

are you saying I need to locate the zmrepo file and update the url in it? I can't find any file named zmrepo

Follow the directions at https://zmrepo.zoneminder.com. The newer versions will just override the old ones.

thankyou and I'm still struggling a bit but at your link I saw there was a raspian image for a raspberry pi at the bottom of the page. I managed to get it up and running however that damn play button is still greyed out, it still defaults to stop and the event won't play unless I select 1x from the drop down list. aarrgghh

update:
I've managed to update zm 1.34 to 1.36 using the instructions I found here:

but would you believe it the event play button is still greyed out and the web interface won't play an event at all now. before with 1.34 I could get the event to play by clicking the 'stop' drop down list and then clicking 1x but now even that won't work. I can't play back any event.
