Is docker lagging behind, and is manual install the recommended install these days?

Post by myurkoski »

Hey everyone, longtime user and huge advocate of the program you've all created. I had a question about the most preferred way to install.

Background:
  • In the past I've created a LXC container and happily manually built out a perfect little Zoneminder ecosystem within it. I was fine with that, completely comfortable with it.
  • However, Ive recently juggled PCs, and want to run Home Assistant as well on the same machine. This got me thinking that Docker would be a more sensible approach, since HA installs as a docker container. This gives me two containers to manage the same way under the docker ecosystem.
  • Upon investigating, however, the docker packages don't appear to be maintained (dlandon is deprecated, ZMHQ doesnt seem to have a jammy image).
  • Attempting to build a 1.36 docker image for jammy also failed exactly like this other person's focal build failed
So based on all of this, I got the impression that the manual install method is still king, and am about to just rinse/repeat that process. Is this an accurate assessment? Or is there some modern, well-maintained, jammy-friendly docker image for Zoneminder that I just didn't find in my forum hunts? Im not a docker wiz so maybe there's something really rudimentary that I'm just missing.

Thanks for all the amazing work you do!

I like to install on barebones using debian/ubuntu packages.

That being said, I prefer LXC to docker. I had no end of problems this weekend with docker, whereas I have lxc pretty much figured out.

THe people have clearly spoken though, docker is the preferred way to go. Hopefully people eventually come to their senses. There are several decent docker images available.

I think we need to work towards an official docker image though.

It really did look like jantman was going to whip up an official image back in this thread. Did that all fall through, or is it still being worked on?
