Newbie question - How to apply filters (and make them stick)

I am having problems getting filters to "stick". I can save and retrieve my filters fine, but whenever I click on the "Show Filter Window", the "Use Filter:" box is blank and the filter operations revert to the default. I have read through the README and attempted to search the forums for this problem with no luck so far. Can someone please guide me further?
