I'm after killing 2 birds with one stone here, I'm going to use zoneminder to monitor the driveway for movement, but is it also possible to compare the current image against a reference one, so that I can check if the driveway is occupied?

If you want to monitor for movement and occupation you would effectively need to be checking against two reference images. Currently this can't be done easily but it may be hackable. I'll have to have a think how though.
