Hi, I've been going nuts over the past few days trying to get ZoneMinder to work, I have read the docs, I have looked at the log files and I have googled until my eyes hurt.

Zoneminder v 1.19.5
Mysql 4.1.8
all other packages as from Fedora Core 3 - I have even gone back to the install disks and installed absoloutely everything (yes all of it) in an attempt to make sure any dependencies were satisfied.

Currently navigating to x.x.x.x/index.php brings up the login screen, I can login with admin/admin and I have created a user and a video source pointing to /dev/video0.

Everytime I click on the Stopped part of "ZoneMinder Console Stopped" I get a new window with a drop down box where I select 'Start' (which is the only option) and click 'Apply' this returns me after a short pause to the main window still showing stopped. Also I currently get a dialgog box "ZoneMinder - Version//An update to ZoneMinder is available./The latest release is vZM_DYN_LAST_VERSION, you have v1.19.5. " which presumably means something else has gone wrong.

I ran ./configure --with-mysql=/usr/bin --with-webdir=/var/www/html --with-cgidir=/var/www/cgi-bin and do get some warnings

configure: WARNING: You can call configure with the --with-ffmpeg option.
This tells configure where to find the ffmpeg build directory within which a re the libavcodec
and libavformat files that can be used to build true MPEG streaming into ZoneMinder. A normal
install of ffmpeg only installs the applications and not the libraries o r headers necessary
to link to so this will probably be a local or temporary directory.
e.g. --with-ffmpeg=/usr/local
configure: WARNING: You can call configure with the --with-lame option.
This tells configure where to find the Lame library which can be used by the ffmpeg libraries
to generate IE compatible MPEG audio streams. This option is only necess ary if you have built
the ffmpeg package itself with the --enable-mp3lame option and if the no rmal link cannot
find the library. Using mp3lame is not necessary or of any benefit to Zo neMinder per se.
e.g. --with-lame=/use/local/lib
configure: WARNING: You can call configure with the --with-webuser option.
This tells configure what the user name of the web user is if it is not the default of 'apache'.
e.g. --with-webuser=apache or --with-webuser=web
configure: WARNING: You can call configure with the --with-webgroup option.
This tells configure what the group name of the web group is if it is not the default of 'apache'.

all that is currently in /tmp/zmpkg.log is:

all other log files do not exist (during my experiments I have deleted them so as to create a fresh set of messages that only relete to the latest configuration)

Just done a reboot and now get no response to opening the zm.php web page.

The services GUI tool shows that zoneminder is not running because
BAREWORD "ZM_PATH_LOGS" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at /usr/local/bin/zmpkg.pl line 62.
BEGIN not safe after errors-compilation aborted at /usr/local/bin/zmpkg.pl line 63.

logfiles in /tmp same as above.

It looks rather like you don't have any configuration in your database. Did you remember to run zmconfig.pl to install it? Otherwise just check that the Config table has entries in. I've not tried it on FC3 yet but I use FC1 and FC2 all the time and I can usually get ZM up and running in a few minutes.

Have you checked for errors in any of the logs?

Yeah, somewhere along the line I must have trashed the database, running "SELECT * from Config;" in mysql gave an empty set.

I reran perl ./zmconfig.pl and the data is now in the table.
For good measure I then ran make as well as make install
The ZM service now starts OK on boot and from /etc/init.d/rc.d/zm restart
however the web page is still blank:-

Obviously there are still problems - the word crashed tells even me that - where do I go next?

What do you see in /var/log/messages?

This is the critical problem I think

Basically if you follow the instruction in the relevant FAQ entry here you should get that sorted.

Yes that has done it - well there is now some fairly serious and constant disk activity which I assume means the daemon is busy doing its job.

I still have blank web pages (errors about pconnect) but I think that is more an issue with mismatched versions of php and mysql. Given that at some point I had working web pages but no service and now I have a service but no pages I should be able to sort this out.
