Axis cameras on time lapse with dropped events

I am having a problem with events being "dropped off" and not written to disk.

My current setup is a Pentium III 500 Mhz computer with 256 of ram and a 200GB HD using ZM version 1.19.5 installed from a LiveCD.

My goal was to monitor 19 Axis 2100 cameras at a resolution of 640x480 (which is mandatory).

At my first approach trying to get it to work in modect, even with 768 of ram, proved impossible, the computer could handle only 4 cameras and tax on the processor and loads was unacceptable.

The next approach was to get the cameras working on time lapse. By setting each camera to record with section lenghts of 600 seconds, in the Misc options a Maximum FPS value of 0.10 and setting under the buffer tag as:

Image Buffer Size (frames) - 11
Warmup Frames -1
Pre Event Image Buffer - 1
Post Event Image Buffer - 0
Alarm Frame Count - 1

... I achieved 600 second segments composed of 60 frames (separated 10 seconds each) for all 19 cameras. I was even amazed to see how events are handled every 10, 20, 30, 40, and 00 minutes on the hour, nicely separated, on all 19 cameras. Since I started with 768 of ram I decided to remove memory to see how it handled with 256 of ram and was surprised to find that the load average is of 1.00, processor use around 30%, all ram in use and an equal amount of swap in use. Login into de system takes about a minute and running query speed is acceptable. So it was let off to do its job.

Yet, one day upon my random visits to the console I was puzzled to see that the Hour column which should report 6 events all the way down from camera 1 to camera 19, reported most cameras with 6 and others with only 5 events. Upon clicking on the link, the events window, instead of displaying events on that particular camera the normal way, being every 00, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, one of them was just missing. (Example: 00, 10, 20, 40, 50 were there, but 30 was nowhere to be found, sometimes others, but always just one dropped off).

Detailed study of messages.log showed nothing uncommon, every 10 minutes events end and get started on a completely normal manner yet some do not get recorded into the database nor written on the pertaining camera folder.

A normal camera folder shows events (folders) being created every 10 minutes as expected in this manner:

Code: Select all

Event 196417 - 17/02/2005 10:10:05 P.M.
Event 196437 - 17/02/2005 10:20:04 P.M.
Event 196459 - 17/02/2005 10:30:03 P.M.
Event 196480 - 17/02/2005 10:40:02 P.M.
Event 196501 - 17/02/2005 10:50:27 P.M.
Event 196522 - 17/02/2005 11:00:17 P.M.
But not on the cameras that drop events. The event browse window does show 10 minute separation under the Time column but usually the physical creation of the event folders on the hard disk are created in this weird way:

Code: Select all

Event 196562 - 17/02/2005 11:10:07 P.M.
Event 196581 - 17/02/2005 11:10:06 P.M.
Event 196599 - 17/02/2005 11:10:05 P.M.
Event 196618 - 17/02/2005 11:10:04 P.M.
Being the dropped event anywhere, at the begining or at the end or in between.
Newest events are written first, followed by older ones on a very short lapse as if bufferd out into the HD in a hurry.

I even found another one as weird as:

Code: Select all

Event 196588 - 17/02/2005 11:28:05 P.M.
Event 196607 - 17/02/2005 11:28:04 P.M.
Event 196625 - 17/02/2005 11:28:03 P.M.
Event 196642 - 17/02/2005 11:28:02 P.M.
Event 196660 - 17/02/2005 11:22:27 P.M. <<- huh?
Event 196678 - 17/02/2005 11:28:17 P.M.
Being the dropped event anywhere, at the begining or at the end or in between too.

If the computer is trying to cram up lots of events on such a short time no wonder some are being lost...

... so I decided to try a setup, separating the section length for each camera by 5 seconds (Example: Section Lenght: 550, 555, 560, 565, 570, etc) on an attempt to give each some time to get events written to the HD... yet same results followed :-(

Why would folders with events be written newest first oldest last and within such a short time lapse instead of every ten minutes like the other cameras do?

Any suggestions would be appreciated and thanks for reading this long post :-)

Regards!

This interesting and I'd like to get to the bottom of it. I don't suppose there's anything in /var/log/messages that might indicate why some events are not being saved. I assume all events are still the same length, ie. the ones before the dropped events aren't twice as long?

That is correct, messages dont have anything irregular, it only shows events starting and ending every 10 minutes. Perhaps you could point me to look on another log?

The missing events are just missing and no, they are not part of a previous o after event.

Thinking about ram, I proceeded to install an additional 256 for a total of 512. At first things ran pretty good, the Hour column displayed a "6" all the way from cam 1 to 19. After leaving it all night and finding everything "stable" next morning I thought I had finally hit the nail. Yet today evening, some "5"s appeared on the Hour column. Not as many as before the memory upgrade, but still there.

I had the following error on this server too. BUT, events were still missing before this, though perhaps more have been missing after the following...

Some time ago the PurgeWhenFull filter did not seem to be activated. As expected, linux does not react good to full disks. After managing to stop all recordings and tweaking the PurgeWhenFull filter, the filter started doing its job, yet even as programmed to go no further than 90% the filter just kept on going :-S

I remember to have stopped the filter and reprograming it to work at 90% (by that time the disk was erased from 100% down to 72%). I restarted the recordings on every camera and the filter now does its job once it reaches 90%, but events keep missing.

Question:

Is there any command you could suggest me to run onto the server that could "reindex" or fix possible corruptions of the database? I would like to try this first.

If this does not do it, then perhaps add an additional 256 of ram. At first (using 512 of ram) the swap was little used. I have found that after 24 hours it jumped to about 128 as reported by top command.

If the problem would still persist... I guess a clean install would be the next option.

If this were to be the case I would ask for your help to tell me which files to backup concerning the configuration of the cameras (doing the 19 by hand once again would be quite a drag lol).

Thanks Phil

mysqlcheck is the easiest way to check the database. I don't think adding more ram should make any difference unless you are already getting excessive swapping.

I'd like to figure out why this is happening. The beginning and end of each event should be recording /var/log/messages so if you grep for 'event' in there we should get some clue as to whether the event was never 'ended' or the missing one didn't start.

The easiest way to backup your configuration is to just use mysqldump which outputs SQL which you can pipe into a backup file.

Yesterday morning I found the server halted with 2 zombie processes running. I decided to run mysql repair and it seemed to do its job without reporting fixing or better yet popping any kind of problem during the job.

(I must add that I am not a linux guru and I aplogize for the lack/bad information I am supplying. Im good with instructions tho :-) )

I decided to restart everything and visited de server about 3 times during the day, finding everything nice and dandy with "6"s all the way down on the Hour column.

Today I visited once again in the morning and saw only one "5" on the whole column but the Day showing pretty much consistent.

I am curious too about one thing that does happen every time I visit the console. Upon a couple of visits later today I saw that events that are being lost seem to coincide with my visits to the console!

A few moments ago I visited the console and got this from /var/log/messages:

Nineteen events ending and nineteen starting. The ending events have to do with the 00:30:00 to 00:40:00 time frame. Well... these events were dropped off! Concidentaly with the time I visit the console.

I guess the next thing I will do is visit to see if the folders with the events are actually there, then open de console to see what it reports.

I am having a feeling a fresh install is the most likely thing to do :-S

Just thought I'd mention a little known point about your livecd installation. :)
I put a myisamcheck line in the mysql startup script, so the tables get checked, and fixed if needed anytime you reboot or restart mysql.

So there goes the "corrupt mysql theory"...

Ross, thanks for going the extra mile!

A few moments ago I approached the "Peeping Tom Technique".

I logged in and randomly selected folders of events trying to see if there were lost ones in the last 12 of them (which accounts for about 2 hours). All folders were there and correctly spaced (created) 10 minutes each. I proceeded to log in via the console and was happy to find none were missing (for the last hour at least).

After leaving work and clearing my mind a little I recapitulated on the importance of logs (duh!) so... here is the log of the moment the server "halted" I hope it sheds some light on possible fix approaches.

I think this
Feb 19 23:30:08 videoserver zma-m8[2761]: ERR [Can't insert event: Incorrect key file for table: 'Events'. Try to repair it]
is the key point. Everything afterwards is related and process etc are falling over all the time.

Looking at http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=5686 implies this is a MySQL bug. I can't quite figure out which version do or don't have it but you could try the suggestion at the bottom to dump, recreate and then reload your DB.

Do you get this error every time an event goes missing? Because I can't see how any new ones ever get created if that is the case.

Eklectick,
Can you try restarting mysql when your system is dropping events? Just do "sudo service mysql restart" and see if that restores full function.

If you report that doing this restores function, I will post a "watchdog" script that will monitor logs for this error, and restart mysql.

The error I posted above is not common, as a matter of fact it has happend only twice and within about 2 to 3 weeks one from another. The server does not "halt" or spurt errors unfortunately, /var/log/messages just shows events starting and ending in a normal fashion, it even reports ending events that dont show up as a folder in the events folder.

The thing is, that the dropping is so variable, that its hard to pinpoint when they do. For example, a few moments ago I visited the console, as you can see, the Hour column shows 6 events have been recorded (which is correct) in the last hour. But during the last Day, events should all be 144 (6 per hour times 24 hours) yet as you can see some are not.

Image

I have seen several times that the dropped events occur many times during my visit to the console (as if something triggered this) but as you can see, my last visit did not trigger any loss. This visit to the console perhaps is the second within the last 24 hours and as puzzling as this can be, it seems to me that the less I visit, the less events are dropped (but I guess this can not be to blame).

Upon Phil´s suggestion, I was wondering which version of mysql the LiveCD has and perhaps if your next release will have a newer version :-)

I used the command you suggested on this last visit. Do you think this command could be run in the cron perhaps hourly and test it there to see if this gets rid of the errors or is this command perhaps not to be used so frequently? Do you think another command would be worth testing in the cron?

If the hourly cron suggestion is feasible would you please help me out on how to "script" it in there?

Ross and Phil thanks a bunch for your help!

Regards!

The version of MySQL on the livecd is 4.0.18 and Mandrake 10.1 uses 4.0.20. The bug report Phil linked to refers to 4.1.5. If it is the culprit, we may be stuck with it for awhile. However if that error message is not common to all (or most) dropped events, we may have a more subtle bug. Perhaps not related to MySQL.

If you enter "sys" in a konsole terminal window (alias for "sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog" ) you can watch syslog entries as they are generated. Can watch this while you open the ZM console, and see if you can "trigger" a dropped event, and see if any error messages are associated with it?

Restarting MySQL hourly from cron might be a little heavy handed, and may trip up ZM as it is creating events. But if you want to try it (nothing ventured, nothing gained, eh?) this should be all you need.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
/etc/init.d/mysql restart
Put it in a file called mysql_restart or similar in /etc/cron.hourly/ and then do "chmod +x mysql_restart". It takes about 3.5 seconds to run on my machine. Again you can use "sys" to watch and see if it generates any ZM errors. You can run it by using the full path, so you don't need to wait for cron to run it on the hour.

Best regards,

Ross

One other thing I was think about was whether the event ids were all sequential. In other words is there a missing id corresponding to the missing event or are the ids in sequence but not the events themselves. It might give us a bit of a clue to know.

The other thing I thought was just to check you have no filters running that are nipping in and deleting events as soon as they are created. This has happened to me in the past when I forgot to turn one off! You can check zmfilter.log to make sure.

Logged in via telnet, ran sys and upon login got this:

Code: Select all

Feb 25 08:30:07 videoserver zma-m17[2850]: INF [ppnl0v39: 42773 - Starting new event]

I proceeded to login via de console and the above lines did not add any additional ones, the console in the Hour column showed "6´s" all the way down but several eventes were missing from the Day column in a general basis.

Upon Phil´s opinion on events starting and ending, this followed the above print two minutes later:

Which is pretty consistent with what happens when events are dropped, although no events were dropped during this time frame. Events do not end and start in the Id order (they all end and start in a random order but at the end all 19 are there) I guess this is "normal" ? :-S

I mentioned before that this disk got full because of not implementing the PurgeWhenFull filter. I had to create a filter to clean the database a little quicker (running both at the same time) which did erase but not stopped at 90%. I did stop that and erased that filter leaving PurgeWhenFull at 90 Disk Space, which has been running fine.

The cron job is the next thing I will throw at it :-)

I realised that the event id is not displayed in the 'Starting new event' string. If you like you can edit zm_monitor.cpp and change the debug line that has 'Starting new event' in it to

Code: Select all

Info(( "%s: %03d - Starting new event %d", name, image_count, event->Id() ));
then at least we'll be able to track when the events themselves were created and whether the ids are correct.

Phil and Ross

Today I deployed a clean install on a clean HD disk using LiveCD 1.19.5. I removed too 256 of ram, leaving the system with 256 only because I really feel this is not the problem either.

After installation I updated MySQL on the server to the latest version (I posted the procedure I followed to do this on the LiveCD threads).

The system as we speak is working nice and dandy without lost events (crossing fingers), but definitely I think MySQL has to be "stressed" up a little bit more to really see if MySQL was the culprit.

I made the change you suggested on the top post in the zm_monitor.cpp file, but messages does not show any additional data. Phil, I have to remind you that I am not a linux guru and appreciate the "spoon feeding" you guys are providing: spoon feeding that by the way, gets one kicked and banned from other forums! Thanks guys, I appreciate the nice attitude of this forum

As I was saying, did the change but no additional data is showing up after this, do I have to "compile" or restart the whole thing in order for this change to show up?

Regards!
