I keep running into the problem that I get cloude movement causing the light to get low and then suddenly no mor clouds and it gets really bright which triggers a motion event. Any way around that?

Hi,

I've the same problem, but i'm afraid that they are no solution except tuning parameters of the zone.

If you have an are that get really bright first you could setup a separte zone on that that would coase all oher detection to be ignored for a period. Other than thatyour a bit stuck. As zm and all motion detectio works by examing the previous frame for changes compaed to the current from, genuine movement and light changes both produce serious image change so as red flyer states i think your a bit stuck. Movement detectors are better at this so my vote always goes for proper movement detection. I personnaly only use zm motion detection to increase the recorded frame rate in mocord mode. But having said that zm detection is an extremely powerful customisable bit of kit, if your prepared to put the time into 'tweaking' the zone you will get it to do what you want. Im just lazy and prefer not to lol.

The only way I know to really get around changes like that is to use a PIR or other type of motion sensor to trigger an event.

Cordel out of interest how do you get pir's into your zm box?
just curious

I haven't done it yet. You would need something to detect the output of the pir and provide the voltage to it. It should not be to hard to construct a serial, usb, or parallel interface to accomplish that. Of course USB would be a bit more involved and a bit more expencive.
I have had interest in doing so but this a ways back on my ever growing project list and I'm sure there is an interface already available to do it. I remember seeing a pci card that had 6 switch closers and 6 inputs that would work. Another way would be to get an X10 computer dongle capable of two way communications and use X10 stuff. There is also the option of using (trade secret shh) http://www.globalcache.com/products/gc-index.html which works very well (and some additional benifites) The GC's are the a bit earlier on my list to work with then I'd like to build an expandable USB device just for sensor input. The big thing with USB is getting a real USB ID for the device so that it's done correctly.
