Hello.

I have a computer system now (asus k8-v, amd64 3200+), 1GB ecc mem, 2 x 200GB sata and ati graphics.

Now I'm looking for capture card/s and cameras.

The system I am looking at building is 8 cameras. 4 fixed and 4 PTZ.

The idea is to place the cameras in pairs, one above the other, 12+ feet high near/on the property line pointing at the corners of the house.

4 fixed cameras to be 90+ degrees viewing angle to overlap the other Two cameras and provide a general, continous wide view. On sensing movement, the PTZ will pan, tilt and zoom to get a close-up of the movement for better/clearer identification.

Color for day and good low-level B/W for night with IR.

Any suggestions on the card/s ?

Suggestions for the two types of camera.

I intend to configure the H/D using LVM/EVMS so I can easily add extra H/D's when needed.

Hello again.

I wondering how feasable that plan is.

A typical camera with a 3.6mm lens will have a field of view of 78 degrees.

A 2.5mm lens has about 112 degrees of view and a 1.7mm around 135 degrees od view.

But what will the picture be like ?

Goldfish bowl view ??

Does anyone have any experience of wide angle lenses ???

the widest you want to go on a 1/3" chip is 2.6mm. That wide you will get distortions but not massive distortion. With regards to your question any capture card that works with linux will do you see the hardware list for working products. Unfortunatly thats only half the battle. You require quite a complex setup regarding your auto pan tilt to where the activity is, good in theory but it will be interesting to see it working

the second cam is the higher res But i have no experience of these type of cameras, we use seperate ir lamps and cameras but then when we install an external camera with ir the cost of the equipment alone is about £800. also bear in mind that you will probably have interlace capture issues at the higher resolutions so dont bank on being able to capture all 480 lines
