database problem on debian

hey guys,
i am trying to set up the debian package of zm 1.21.3 on ubuntu, but am having troubles with my database.
at the moment when i attempt to start zm i get the following error..
Bareword "ZM_PATH_LOGS" are not allowed while "strict subs" in use at /usr/bin/zmpkg.pl line 77
from reading other posts im guessing this is a database issue..can anyone offer me any ideas on how to recreate my database as im new to linux and pretty much have no idea..
