where is ZM on the new Mandriva 2006 Live CD?

Post by R3MF »

hopefully i not being as stupid as i sound to myself, but:

i have downloaded the latest liveCD, burnt the iso, run the CD, and booted into the OS.

but i cannot find out how to start ZM!

i have checked the system icons in the bottom right.

i have checked the quick-linked apps in the bottom left.

i have trawled through the program menu and found no sign of ZM

there are no launcher icons on the desktop.

the initial documentation makes no mention of how to start ZM, it merely talks about default network settings.

i can find nothing of aid on the ZM website, or in the wiki.

the hardware involved is:
Sempron64 @ 1.6GHz
512MB DDR400
Via K8M800 motherboard with onboard Unichrome Pro Graphics
80GB HD
Logitech USB webcam

am i being stupid?

many thanks for any help

have you downloaded the 1.22.2 live cd or the other one,
If its the live cd and the iso was called it then open a web browser and goto url
http://localhost/zm/
and all should appear.

To check goto a command propt and type
service zm restart and post your results, that will show if zm is running ok

localhost worked fine cheers.
didn't realise it was a web administered application from start to finish.

however, the default "monitor 1" is not seeing my Logitech USB camera, and i cannot find an option in the settings to point "monitor 1" to said camera..............

according to the manual, everything is setup correctly, tho i can find nothing to corralate to the reference to monitor status being "green" in ZM itself. all writing for monitor 1 is blue atm.

the monitor viewing tab itself appears to be ok, but no image is displayed, (just the broken image symbol in the top-right) even tho the camera is attempting to update.

cheers

i should mention:

the camera is a QuickCam Express

and i doesn't show up in XawTV, but i didn't think anything of it because i thought that was for proper Cameras...............

i did the check and ZM stopped and then started ok.

still no image in the monitor window, just the broken image icon.

i think the camera is supported, tho i cannot now find the list on the website.

but ZM does appear to be running, its just not picking up the camera. maybe it is a USB issue as i know the camera functions under windows...........

many thanks

the camera is a QuickCam Express
It depends on how new the camera is. From http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/
Supported Cameras

The qc-usb driver is known to work with the following webcams:

* Dexxa Webcam
* Labtec Webcam (old model)
* LegoCam
* Logitech QuickCam Express (old model)
* Logitech QuickCam Notebook (some models)
* Logitech QuickCam Web
..............
Unsupported Cameras

Certain new Logitech QuickCam Express and Labtec cameras are reported not to work. These cameras have product IDs of 0x920 and 0x921. For these cameras, you might be able to use the SPCA5xx driver, which incorporates and, evidently, obsoletes this experimental driver.
The qc-usb, quickcam, and spca5xx drivers are all included on the CD. So the camera will probably work with one of them if the correct one gets loaded.
Take a look at the out put from the commands "dmesg" and "lsmod" and perhaps post them here.
Also helpful would be error messages in /var/log/syslog and /var/log/zm/*

The easy way to view log files is to use the "tail" command. If you rum this in a konsole window you can view the last "n" lines of a file. Run as root or use sudo for files where you need permissions.
Example:
"sudo tail -n 20 /var/log/zm/zmpkg.log"

Use "tail -f" to keep the view open and watch messages as they are written to the log.
A shortcut is configured for guest to alias "sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog" to just "sys". Try it, you'll like it :)

Just for fun try (as root) "modprobe -r spca5xx && modprobe quickcam" and check dmesg again. Then "modprobe -r quickcam && modprobe qc-usb" and dmesg again. Perhaps one of these drivers will work.
