Pure theory question

If you could, through boredom or just pain sadness how big do you think zm as a single instance could get, ie you have a bottomless pit of cash and want to find how scaleable it really is.

Im thinking
Seperate mysql server
SAN for image storage
Mutilple servers (8way smp) doing the processing

Maybe clustered?
Pure theory sandbox question just wondering what the 'experts' here think on this

Cheers

Hi James

Your theory sounds nice, i can tell you that i have delivered a nice preforming "server" to a site that consists of the following.:

Code: Select all

Asus Motherboard = P5WD2-E Premium
2 Maxtor Maxline +III 250GB
2 Maxtor DM10 80GB
1 Lite On DVD/CDRW
1 Asus EAX300
1 Intel Pentium D 940 3.2 GHz Dual Core
1 Cosair Twin2x2048-6400 2x1024MB
1 CoolerMaster Hyper L3 CPU Cooler
4 92 mm Coolers
1 120 mm Cooler
1 Chieftech CH-01B-B-SL-400
And this server preforms very well, for instance making a video from a 15 sec. event takes around 10-20 secs, and i havent seen the load go higher than 3 in the 5 10 and 15 minutes load with 3 cams on that captures in 320x240 x 30FPS.

And yes this is overkill for only 3 cams, but the site will be expanded to 12 cams over some time, the cams are Axis 221 Day&Night.

The major reason that there is 4 disks in the system was that i had hoped that the mobo could do some raid 1 on them, but sadly the bios dont present the disk as a raid for the linux system, so now they are just as 1 big array thru lvm so the machine now have 599GB of space witch should be more than enough since i have rutines that delete events older than 2 months.

in my opinion the hardest thing will be to do the workload on a big server to estimate how much it can take, curse that will take alot of cams connected to the system.

But then again if the system is big enough then that will not be a problem.

i was just wondering thats all, you know in a what if sort of environment!!

I know that zmaudit stresses the db and so i though to seperate mysql out of the main server and obviously file storage too. But there will be a limit to how many cams/fps can actually be processed even on a 4 way xeon with HT. so i started reading about mini itx and san devices, basically i was thinking of having sperate mini itx's in 1U handling say 4 cams b ut then youd need glue to link all the 1u boxes together. Then i decided i wasnt as bored as i thought i was and gave up.
It doesnt matter it was just a blue sky 'what if i wanted too' kind of thing.

Cheers anyway
