Just checked the download section, there is a link to http://www.computerntelecom.com/pub/linux/zoneminder/, but it only has an empty debian folder.

I already searched the forum, and found the installation instructions for Ubunto Dapper 6.06, but of course a ready to use package would be nicer (especially when it comes to updating).

no, im afraid not. There are 2 people that create packages, Ross and Corey. Corey uses fedora and Ross uses mandrake. I also use mandrake but dont know how to package anything lol. If any of the debian users could make one though i would host it

Now that's bad, that nobody else using a Debian based distribution responded.

There surely has to be quite a crowd out there, and they all install ZoneMinder manually from source?

As mentioned, I found some howto's and tutorials, that's not the point, but it surely would make sense to have a package for all the major packaging-systems available, and not only as RPM and for Mandrake.

I'm gonna wait now, until Ubuntu 6.10 is released on 26th October, and then I'll try to install ZoneMinder, to see how it works with our Panasonic WV-NM100 network cameras, but I am a little concerned about future updates, if I compile and install it from source. A ready to use .deb package would make it so much easier, and also surely would attract even more people, who are able to fiddle around with their Debian based system, to give ZoneMiner a go.

i agree it would be nice but i dont use debian and none of the existing people who give packages do either. I suppose if we ever get another package volunteer then could provide these for debian until then its source or rpms

It would be lovely, we just need that special person who has the ability and can spare the time.

That's the problem, I would like to help, but I'm a total Ubuntu newbie, which means, Kubuntu 6.10 will be the first Debian based distro I'm gonna use, so no packaging skills here.

But I can't believe, that there really is no other Debian / (K/X)Ubuntu / Mephis zealot out there using ZoneMinder, who would be able to provide a .deb package.

So it's about someone out there, who uses a Debian based distro, and has the skills & spare time to contribute a .deb package. Anyone?

I've had offers to help me learn how to create packages with Debian, but I'm having trouble getting ZM actually installed in any structured way....

Hm, to install ZM in Ubuntu does not seem to cause any problem, see for example the guide in the wiki at http://www.zoneminder.com/wiki/index.ph ... 6_-_Dapper

The problem will be solely to package it up into a valid and ready to use .deb package. I may take a look at it, as soon as I have it up and running (as mentioned, I'm waiting for the stable Ubuntu 6.10 to be released on 26th October), but I don't think I can dig deep into it, because I am not a programmer or geek, but just a normal user.
