how to change panspeed

Hello,
I see where I can define a new protocol that I can define variables such as panspeed, panstep, etc. Same for tilt and focus. How can I send different values to my control script? I don't see any extra buttons show up on my viewing window when I enable these.
The camera I'm using is an old pelco with fixed speed ptz. I have the autostop working but it's kind of cumbersome to open the source>control window and change the autostop value depending on how much zoom I have cranked in.
If I could get zm to pass different panspeed values to my control script I could generate an appropriate autostop value within the script.
I am open to any other ideas how this could be solved too.
Thanks much!
Joel
